Dr. Jim Kenny Announced as the Leadership Instructor for TIA’s Executive Development Leadership Program

Alexandria, VA (July 13, 2023) – The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), the premier organization for third-party logistics professionals, today announced that Dr. Jim Kenny will be assuming the role of Leadership Instructor for its Executive Development Leadership Program (ELDP). TIA’s ELDP is an Executive MBA-style program designed to develop future 3PL leaders by teaching students about all of the facets of running a successful freight brokerage.

TIA designed this program to build the foundation for the next generation of TIA members and logistics industry leaders. In the ELDP, students gain a better understanding of the latest methods, techniques and strategies for running a freight brokerage. The program includes two in-person sessions at TIA’s annual conferences, the Capital Ideas Conference & Exhibition and Technovations. In addition to these sessions, the ELDP also includes online virtual instructor-led training to offer maximum flexibility to students.

“Professor Jim Kenny is a wildly successful instructor not just because he educates his students well, but because he engages his students thoroughly. He has decades of experience in brokerage, academia and corporate consulting, and conveys all his knowledge in a compelling way,” said Anne Reinke, TIA President and CEO. “We at TIA are lucky to have him as part of our Education Team and are delighted that he will be part of the Leadership instruction in our Executive Leadership Development Program.”

The ELDP promotes a holistic view of the latest in best practices that directly impact all brokerage businesses. The instruction and program contents are rooted in the fundamentals needed to operate and level up a successful transportation brokerage, including these six core areas of focus: sales & marketing, financial management, HR & contractor management, legal management, operations management and business leadership.

“To teach is to learn twice. That is the fun of getting to teach TIA’s Leadership Class. I focus on helping the attendees learn the material and how to teach it to their teams so they can apply it,” said Jim T. Kenny Ph.D., TIA’s ELDP Instructor. “The focus of the case studies and exercises revolve around the five core principles of leadership and how to apply them to operate a 3PL. I am absolutely thrilled to get to teach this class for TIA.”

TIA is also proud to announce that they are partnering with TrustCentric Consulting to provide third-party leadership training to the ELDP students. TrustCentric is an organizational and leadership development firm that helps leaders, teams and organizations keep trust at the center of everything they do. TrustCentric will use their leadership and organizational knowledge to provide students with the tools, resources and insights they need to successfully lead a freight brokerage.

“I’m so honored and excited that TrustCentric™️ will be partnering with TIA to provide relevant, practical and actionable content on how to strengthen organizational trust as part of the learning experience for the TIA Executive Leadership Development Program! There’s such an opportunity within teams and organizations to improve vital performance indicators such as employee retention, employee advocacy, employee loyalty and employee productivity,” said Cory Scheer, Founder & CEO of TrustCentric Consulting. “Our research shows that one of the most important ways to do that is by strengthening organizational trust. Key takeaways from the course will include: a deeper understanding of The Structure of Trust™️, the building blocks of trust and the practical how-to’s of strengthening organizational trust. I’m confident that TIA ELDP members will be encouraged, challenged and equipped with this important content!”Students can learn more about TIA’s ELDP and register here: https://www.tianet.org/eldp/

TIA Releases Free Educational Fraud Course for Members

Alexandria, VA (June 14, 2023) – Following the launch of an internal Fraud Task Force last week, the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) has released a free educational course for its members on fraud in the supply chain. The course focuses on rampant fraud in the marketplace which can take several forms and requires several different strategies. The course provides TIA members with not only an educational brief on the subject itself, but potential strategies and solutions they can use to proactively combat freight instead of reactively after the fraud has already occurred.

“Fraud in the supply chain is an unfortunate evil that good companies must deal with. The internet has accelerated the pace of business, but it has also allowed a dramatic increase in fraud.  The best way to prevent being a victim is through education. The TIA Fraud Course is your best weapon to fight back. The level of fraud is increasing, so now is the time to take action with the TIA Fraud Course,” stated TIA Highway Logistics Conference Committee Chairman Kenny Lund, Executive Vice President, Allen Lund Company.

“We are thrilled to announce the launch of our education course for TIA members. This member-only benefit is designed to empower the TIA community to navigate the issue of fraud in an interactive learning environment. TIA remains at the forefront of tackling fraud within the industry and will continue to work on internal solutions to help our members,” stated Chris Burroughs, Vice President of Government Affairs for TIA.

TIA Launches Task Force to Combat Escalating Fraud in the Industry

Alexandria, VA (June 09, 2023) – In response to the alarming rise in fraudulent activities within the transportation sector in recent years, the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) today announced the establishment of the TIA Fraud Task Force. The Task Force is comprised of industry leading executives within the third-party logistics industry and leading technology companies that are focused on tech-driven solutions to combat fraud.

TIA is the premier organization for third-party logistics professionals, and its members serve as the center of the supply-chain in the facilitation of freight globally and throughout the United States. The association has long been at the forefront of education and advocacy efforts in the fight against fraud in the transportation supply-chain. As reported recently by several prominent news outlets, the level of transportation fraud continues to climb, resulting in estimated costs of approximately $1 billion to trucking companies, shippers, freight brokers, and ultimately consumers.

“TIA is excited to unveil our internal Fraud Task Force, which will examine the latest marketplace trends, develop strategies to address fraud internally within brokerage operations, and work on legislative and regulatory solutions in the short, medium, and long term,” stated Anne Reinke, TIA President & CEO. “We hear from our members on a daily basis about rampant fraudulent activity within the industry. As an organization that recognized the imminent fraud crisis with the enactment of the Fighting Fraud in Transportation Act in 2012, which was incorporated into the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), we want to continue to be a leading voice on the subject.”

To address this issue, TIA has collaborated with carrier organizations to elevate the matter on Capitol Hill and has engaged with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the federal agency responsible for managing complaints about fraudulent companies. To that end, Senator Braun (R-IN) and Congressman Bost (R-IL) recently sent a letter to the FMCSA Administrator and the Department of Transportation Inspector General’s office imploring the agency to establish a Task Force to oversee this issue of fraud and address the thousands of complaints currently lodged with the federal agency. We appreciate the efforts of Senator Braun, Congressman Bost, and the other signatories of this important letter.

As the Association attacks this issue on several different verticals, TIA continues to keep members abreast of the latest fraudulent activities and trends. TIA has disseminated industry best practices and the most up-to-date information to assist members in combatting fraud.

The Task Force will convene regularly to fulfill its mission and goals, which include reducing fraudulent activities in the marketplace and actively engaging the FMCSA to address these concerns. At present, the Agency’s response has been minimal, necessitating urgent action.

Freight Volume Declines Let Up During the First Quarter

TIA’s latest 3PL Market Report points to a tough year ahead but optimism for 2024

ALEXANDRIA, VA (May 24, 2023) — Freight volumes grew a modest 0.5 percent during the first quarter of 2023, halting a streak of quarter-over-quarter declines that begin in 2022. Though the portion of the economy linked to freight is expected to remain weak for the rest of 2023, growth is expected to return in 2024, according to the latest data from the Transportation Intermediaries Association’s 3PL Market Report, First Quarter 2023.

“Data from the first quarter of 2023 indicates the decline in freight volumes we saw at the end of last year has leveled off,” said TIA President and CEO Anne Reinke. “While the freight economy may not grow significantly until 2024, the total economy shows resilience, and our members continue to outperform their non-member peers in key metrics.”

TIA Members saw significant year-over-year declines in shipments, revenue, and invoice amount per shipment during the quarter. These metrics, however, suffered in comparison to an exceptionally strong first quarter of 2022. Quarter-over-quarter drop offs were more modest.

In terms of sector performance, truckload experienced its first quarter-over-quarter decrease in shipments in a year, though shipments for this segment tend to be weaker in the first quarter. Less-than-truckload (LTL) recorded a smaller quarter-over-quarter loss in shipment volumes than in the fourth quarter of 2022. The intermodal sector reported barely any change quarter-over-quarter, owing to low import activity and continued weakness.

“Though conditions remain weakened for the freight economy, the first quarter of 2023 was relatively steady,” said Mark Christos, TIA Chairman of the Board and Chair of the Market Report. “It’s going to be a tricky year, but the strength of TIA members when compared to their peers for metrics like market volume is certainly encouraging.”

TIA’s 3PL Market Report is released on a quarterly basis and uses data collected from 44 participating TIA members to analyze shifts in broker activity, which is largely dominated by the truckload sector. FTR Transportation Intelligence prepared this quarter’s report.

More Takeaways and Trends Include:

  • As of April, payroll employment in for-hire trucking reached an all-time high on a seasonally adjusted basis. Payroll jobs total more than 1.6 million and are nearly 93,000 jobs, or 6.1%, above the pre-pandemic month of February 2020.
  • Net revocations of trucking authority – the number of revocations of operating authority minus the number of reinstatements of authority – reached a record 24,000+ during the first quarter, which was only slightly higher than during the fourth quarter of 2022. That figure dwarfs the pre-pandemic record of nearly 11,300 in the fourth quarter of 2019.
  • Though a large number of small carriers continue to fail, the number of new carriers authorized by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is still high by historical standards. The number of new entrants is about 8,000 to 9,000 more per quarter than pre-pandemic.
  • The truck freight market is experiencing a period of relatively high driver capacity. The active driver population is roughly 18 percent higher than it was immediately prior to the pandemic.

Transportation Intermediaries Association Testifies Before Congress on Overcoming Supply Chain Challenges

Alexandria, VA (May 10, 2023) – In a hearing today before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) President & CEO Anne Reinke provided solutions to alleviate the supply chain disruptions and improve the free flow movement of goods. She also highlighted the role that logistics companies play in the supply chain.

“While there is not one single solution or action that will immediately alleviate the supply chain disruption, several solutions exist that would help improve the movement of goods,” noted Reinke. “The safest and most secure marketplace is also the most efficient and functional marketplace.”

Reinke suggested the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) prioritize a few safety issues, including the development of a more robust and effective motor carrier safety rating process. Currently, the FMCSA uses an outdated physical audit system, but it doesn’t have the proper resources to conduct safety inspections for the vast majority of motor carriers. Consequently, 92% of trucking companies are unrated, causing confusion and uncertainty in the vetting process for TIA members.

She explained that the industry needs a new safety rating system built on fair and reliable data. A few years ago, TIA supported H.R. 915, a bipartisan legislation that would require the FMCSA to begin developing a new Safety Fitness Determination process to change the way carriers are rated.

During the testimony, Reinke also discussed the impact that fraud has on the logistics industry and its customers. As a leading voice in the logistics industry, TIA has been closely following the issue of fraud in the supply chain for decades, which has become an increasingly significant problem in recent years. More than 80,000 complaints have been submitted to the FMCSA-monitored National Consumer Complaint Database, but not a single one of them has been investigated.

“The supply-chain is in the midst of a fraud epidemic, estimated to cost brokers, carriers and shippers around $800 million,” wrote Reinke. “Unfortunately, there is an increase in bad actors in the space illegally brokering freight, registering as carriers using hundreds of MC numbers, and conducting outright fraud, theft, and holding freight hostage, without any legal consequences.”

She emphasized the importance of addressing this issue and outlined TIA’s efforts to combat fraud through ongoing collaboration with government agencies.

Key Takeaways from the TIA 2023 Capital Ideas Conference

Alexandria, VA (April 26, 2023) – The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), wrapped up its 2023 Capital Ideas Conference, April 19-22, in Orlando, FL, bringing together nearly 2,000 attendees from across the nation for four days of networking, education, and receptions.

“It was an incredible honor to be in the same space as some of the brightest minds in the third-party logistics industry,” said Anne Reinke, TIA President & CEO. “We look forward to continuing the conversations started here and working together to drive our industry to new heights.”

Moderated by Adam Angle, TIA’s first-ever Ports panel featured three East Coast Ports officials: Byron Miller of the South Carolina Ports Authority, John Petrino of the Georgia Ports Authority and Robert Peek from the Jacksonville (FL) Port Authority (JAXPORT). The West Coast ports were under intense pressure and scrutiny during the height of the pandemic, affecting many TIA members, and shifting many traffic flows to these East Coast ports. TIA trucking and intermodal members heard about the future growth ambitions of the Ports as well as ways to leverage their business through a relationship with the Ports.

On Friday, Congresswoman Kat Cammack took the stage with Vice President of Government Affairs Chris Burroughs to chat about the supply chain and infrastructure projects in the United States. She addressed her outlook for the 118th Congress, touched on several key legislative initiatives within the House of Representatives. TIA extends its appreciation to Congresswoman Cammack for attending the conference.

TIA approved four new at-large Board Members on Friday: Daniel Ilg, CTB of ILG Logistics; Mark Fiorini, CTB of Westgate Logistics; Alicia Bly of Johanson Transportation Service; and Justin Olsen of England Logistics. Additionally, Cori Eckley, CTB of NATCO Transport will serve as the new Foundation Board Chair. TIA identified Josh Perkes of Loup Logistics as its Intermodal Logistics Conference Chair; Ken Lund of Allen Lund Company as its Highway Logistics Conference Chair; and Jason Craig of C.H. Robinson as its Air Freight & International Logistics Conference Chair.

The conference also touched on a timely issue—the rise of fraud in the supply chain.  Due to the FMCSA’s lack of enforcement, unlawful entities continue to commit fraud in the supply chain with limited to no repercussions. On Saturday morning, TIA held an educational session focused on this issue. Several TIA members outlined what tools they implement in their carrier selection process. They also discussed the lack of enforcement by the FMCSA, which has led to roughly $700 million in fraudulent activity throughout the industry.

The bustling Exhibit Hall showcased products and services from 90 of the leading organizations in the supply chain industry, giving attendees the opportunity to explore the latest TMS products, load boards, business operations systems, insurance offerings, and more. Education sessions touched on topics such as litigation in the freight brokerage industry, fighting cyberthreats, dynamic pricing, and consolidation in the logistics space.

TIA partnered with Truckers Against Trafficking to bring the Freedom Drivers Project to the conference, a first-of-its-kind mobile exhibit that raises awareness about domestic sex trafficking and provides action steps that anyone can take to combat human trafficking. The exhibit showcased real artifacts from trafficking cases and portraits of truckers who have rescued trafficking victims. In order to educate members of the hospitality industry, the Freedom Drivers Project also opened its doors to local hotel staff, managers, and housekeepers during the conference.

We extend our deep appreciation and thanks to our speakers, sponsors, and attendees for making this year’s event a resounding success. The 2024 Capital Ideas Conference will take place in Phoenix, AZ, April 10-13, 2024.
