Anne Reinke, TIA President & CEO, Named Recipient of 2023 Women in Supply Chain Award

Alexandria, VA (September 18, 2023) — The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) is thrilled to announce its President & CEO Anne Reinke has been selected as a recipient of the 2023 Women in Supply Chain Award. Recognized by Food Logistics and Supply & Demand Chain Executive, the award honors female supply chain leaders and executives whose accomplishments, mentorship and examples set a foundation for women in all levels of a company’s supply chain network.

Anne has spent more than 25 years in the transportation and logistics industry, working in both advocacy and leadership roles. She began her position at TIA in October 2020 in the midst of the pandemic and has helped lead the third party logistics community through supply chain disruptions, issues of fraud and truck driver shortages, and many other obstacles.

Prior to joining TIA, Anne worked at the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), where she served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary – Congressional Affairs. She started her service at USDOT in April 2019, initially as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs, and transitioned to Congressional Affairs in November 2019. Before that, Anne spent 16 years at CSX Corporation in their Federal Affairs office, ultimately serving as the Vice President – Government Affairs, overseeing the Federal, State Government and Community Affairs Departments. Before joining CSX, she worked at the Association of American Railroads and High Speed Ground Transportation Association.

“This year, we received over 400 submissions, the highest amount of applications not only for this award, but also for all of our awards. What’s more, 118 of those applications were submitted by male counterparts, nominating their boss, co-worker or associate. Last year, that figure was just at 75. Also this year, 39 women self-nominated, a tremendous uptick from last year’s award, which just saw 12 self-nominations. This shows progress. This shows hope that one day, we won’t need an award like this because men and women in the supply chain will be equal,” says Marina Mayer, Editor-in-Chief of Food Logistics and Supply & Demand Chain Executive. “While there’s still more work to be done, what we’re doing is working. From truck drivers to CEOs, what these winners are doing matters to the future of all supply chains.”

“Women have been making a significant impact in supply chain management, contributing to the growth and innovation of the supply chain industry. As more women join the supply chain workforce, they bring diverse perspectives that can help address complex supply chain problems and improve global supply chain operations. It is important that we empower, recognize and elevate these achievements through initiatives like the Women in Supply Chain Award, as seen through the overwhelming response. Congratulations to all the winners, those who nominated others and the bravery of those who nominated themselves,” adds Sarah Barnes-Humphrey, founder of Let’s Talk Supply Chain podcast and Blended Pledge project, both exclusive sponsors of the Women in Supply Chain award.

TIA Releases Sustainability Whitepaper for Logistics Professionals

Alexandria, VA (September 7, 2023) – The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), the premier organization for third-party logistics professionals, today released a Sustainability Whitepaper. This whitepaper was developed by TIA’s Shipper Committee, and will act as a valuable resource and guide for third party logistics professionals as they navigate the transition to low-carbon transportation.

“There is no doubt that sustainable goals and initiatives will continue to shape and impact the logistics industry,” said Anne Reinke, TIA President and CEO. “We want TIA members and industry professionals to have the research, insights and information they need to make informed decisions that will have a positive impact on the environment. We hope this whitepaper does just that, and helps logistics professionals confidently navigate the sustainable transportation movement.”

TIA’s Sustainability Whitepaper explores the challenges and opportunities faced by transportation providers in response to the global shift toward low-carbon and sustainable practices. Many manufacturers and retailers are setting ambitious sustainability goals, driven by factors such as government regulations and consumer demand for eco-friendly products. The whitepaper addresses the risks and complexities of meeting these goals, looking at everything from added costs to emissions reporting.

One of the whitepaper’s biggest takeaways is that products with environmental, social and governance claims are growing faster than those without. TIA found that although shippers are increasingly seeking greener transport, they are concerned about the pricing gap with conventional services. The whitepaper covers areas like intermodal transport, private fleets, dedicated fleets and electric trucks, and even includes quotes from logistics professionals on how sustainability is impacting their companies.

Automotive Production a Bright Spot for Freight Market in Q2

TIA’s latest 3PL Market Report points to ongoing softness but resilience heading into 2024

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Aug. 22, 2023) — While the freight market continues to experience weakness, total shipments across all sectors rose quarter over quarter (0.8%), a development that softened declines in revenue during the second quarter of 2023, according to the latest data from the Transportation Intermediaries Association’s 3PL Market Report, Second Quarter 2023. Second quarter results were helped along by an all-time high in automotive production as manufacturers pushed to replenish inventories and satisfy pent-up demand.

“We’ve known, based on previous outlooks, that the second quarter was going to be soft,” said Mark Christos, TIA Chair and Chair of the Market Report. “Nevertheless, there are enough positive developments, for example, truckload volume was slightly down year over year and gained from Q1 2023, and the surge in automotive manufacturing as well as the resilience of the total economy, is expected to bolster optimism for our members for future quarters.”

TIA Members saw year-over-year declines in shipments, revenue, and invoice amount per shipment during the quarter. Results were similar quarter-over-quarter apart from shipment volumes, which rose a modest 0.8% owing seasonality. Smaller TIA members outperformed their peers year-over-year, while large brokers saw the greatest softening across all key categories.

In terms of sector performance, truckload (TL) was the only one to see a quarter-over-quarter improvement in shipments (1.9%), though it experienced declines in all other metrics. Intermodal (IM), which typically sees a seasonal uptick in the second quarter, saw volume and other metrics decline, reflecting weaker import activity. Less-than-truckload (LTL) also experienced quarter-over-quarter declines in shipments, revenue and invoice amount per shipment.

TIA’s 3PL Market Report is released on a quarterly basis and uses data collected from more than 50 participating TIA members to analyze shifts in broker activity, which is largely dominated by the truckload sector. FTR Transportation Intelligence prepared this quarter’s report.

More Takeaways and Trends Include:

  • Consumer spending trends pose a risk for the freight economy as Americans continue to spend a greater share of their disposable income than they did pre-pandemic. Stimulus-driven cash reserves and lower debt levels could sustain the trend, but it could also change if the labor market cools. Another risk is the resumption of student loan payments this fall.
  • The failure of Nashville-based Yellow Corporation at the end of July likely will change the dynamic in the LTL sector during the third quarter, however it’s too early to know by what degree. The disruption likely would shift some volume to brokers, but both invoice amounts and carrier pricing could also rise due to the sudden loss of LTL capacity.
  • After an unprecedented surge in new carriers from mid-2020 through mid-2022, the carrier population has been falling sharply for three quarters with each quarter setting a record. Larger carriers have been absorbing the drivers freed up by failing small carriers, so payroll employment remains solid even as total capacity has fallen.
  • As of mid-August, diesel prices had jumped about 61 cents in six weeks following a steady decline since June 2022. The recent price surge could be temporary. Yet, if it is the beginning of a sustained increase in fuel costs, the ongoing failures of small carriers could accelerate.

The full report “3PL Market Report, Second Quarter 2023, Issue 59” is available for free to media upon request.

Please note: The 3PL Market Report is intended for TIA subscribers and the full report is not meant to be reproduced or redistributed by any recipients.

TIA Unveils Updated Carrier Selection Framework to Combat Industry Fraud

Alexandria, VA – On Monday, August 7, 2023, the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) released the latest version of their landmark framework, the TIA Carrier Selection Framework. The TIA Carrier Selection Framework assists TIA members with industry guidance and key considerations when choosing motor carriers to transport customers’ freight.

The 2023 update was led by Chairwoman Alicia Bly, CTB, Vice President, Corporate Operations and Legal Affairs for Johanson Transportation Service based in Fresno, CA. The TIA CSA-Carrier Selection Framework Subcommittee focused on the latest the guidance from the FMCSA regarding dispatch services and the role in the brokerage industry, as well as addressing the increased industry-wide fraud.

“There is no doubt that we are in the midst of a fraud apocalypse in the supply chain and the criminals and bad actors are getting more creative with their tactics and strategies to take advantage of the hard-working brokers and carriers in the marketplace. The need for a carrier selection process has never been greater and we are thrilled to release this latest version,” stated Chairwoman Bly.

“TIA is honored to continue releasing this landmark framework to assist members in navigating the complexities of carrier selection. With the growing fraud in the marketplace, a consistent carrier selection process will help ensure that our members avoid selecting fraudulent carriers,” stated TIA Vice President of Government Affairs Chris Burroughs.

TIA Unveils Watchdog Program Enhancements through Collaboration with Highway

Alexandria, VA (August 3, 2023) – The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), the premier organization for third-party logistics professionals, is thrilled to announce enhancements to its Watchdog® program through a strategic relationship with Highway. The collaboration aims to raise the industry standard for legitimate 3PL and carrier companies by honing in on truly fraudulent behavior, and broadening the universe of reports available to TIA members.

“Cultivating trust and integrity in the logistics industry is paramount,” said Anne Reinke, TIA President and CEO. “This strategic relationship with Highway will provide our members a greatly improved TIA Watchdog experience and access to enhanced tools and resources to combat fraudulent activities. Together, we are raising the industry standard and reinforcing our commitment to a secure and transparent transportation ecosystem.”

TIA Watchdog® will remain a dedicated platform for members to report critical information about real fraud within the industry. However, TIA members will have access to a greater scope of data beyond the current 3,400 people across the nation, giving members more information about the supply chain partners they choose. This knowledge sharing allows members to make informed decisions when selecting which companies to work with; quickly alert each other to marketplace problems; and prevent negative incidents from occurring.

“As the leading trade association for third-party logistics, TIA plays a critical role in developing the security and stability of this industry,” said Jordan Graft, Highway’s CEO.  “We are grateful for the opportunity to enhance the value of the Watchdog® product offering for TIA members and bring greater transparency and trust to the US supply chain.”

Serving as a technology and industry thought innovator, Highway’s mission is to make freight more connected and secure. Highway will play a vital role in developing and supporting TIA Watchdog®, and TIA members will continue to receive free standard access to Watchdog®. Additional and enhanced service options will be newly available to members including insurance monitoring, carrier identity management and TMS integration.

Fraudulent activities continue to rise within the transportation sector, costing approximately $1 billion to trucking companies, shippers, freight brokers, and ultimately consumers. With a strong commitment to advocacy and education, TIA has been a leading advocate in the fight against fraud in the transportation supply chain.

The Association recognized the impending fraud crisis more than a decade ago, leading to its support of the Fighting Fraud in Transportation Act in 2012. Since then, TIA has remained at the forefront of the issue, actively voicing concerns in Congressional hearings and educating its members on the issue. Most recently, the organization launched the TIA Fraud Task Force and a free educational fraud course for its members.
