Before joining TIA in 2014, Sehestedt served for nine years on the staff of U.S. Senator Max Baucus of Montana. There, he focused on budget and appropriations, law enforcement, and small business issues.  He has a B.A. from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

TIA Presents 3PL Congressional Leadership Awards

For Immediate Release

Alexandria, VA (June 6, 2018) – The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) honored U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) and U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL) for their exceptional contributions to the third-party logistics (3PL) industry during the 2018 TIA 3PL Policy Forum, held June 5-6, 2018 in Washington, DC.

Sen. Blunt and Rep. Davis have been long time champions for transportation issues on Capitol Hill. Most recently, they have demonstrated their commitment to the 3PL industry by serving as lead sponsors of a bill that would create a National Hiring Standard for motor carriers.

The National Hiring Standard plays an important role towards improving safety within the transportation industry, specifically by establishing a national standard for hiring motor carriers. If enacted, a hiring entity would be required to:
ensure that a carrier is properly registered,
has obtained the minimum required insurance, and
does not have an unsatisfactory safety rating
Currently, there is no standard or duty of care an entity must take when hiring a carrier. This is a huge step towards removing unsafe carriers from the highways and will remove liability traps plaguing the 3PL industry.

“TIA applauds Sen. Blunt and Rep. Davis for their support of the National Hiring Standard and working diligently to ensure it reaches the President’s desk for his signature,” said TIA President and CEO Robert Voltmann.

Voltmann added, “The $185.7 billion 3PL industry touches the lives of everyone in one way or another. TIA is fortunate to have strong advocates in Washington, DC like Sen. Blunt and Rep. Davis. We look forward to working with them in the future on issues affecting transportation and 3PLs.”

For Immediate Release

Alexandria, VA (April 10, 2018) – The 3PL Industry releases its 2018 Freight Visibility Report.

Drawn from interviews with the largest 3PLs, as well as smaller technology leaders, the report explains in detail how and why increased freight visibility is creating significant value in today’s turbulent business landscape, and how 3PLs are answering shipper demand for more sophisticated, nuanced visibility.

“Visibility is at the forefront of what we do as third-party logistics companies,” said TIA President and CEO Robert Voltmann. “We are the supply chain’s natural technology leaders because we are closest to our customer’s freight, data, and increasingly, their real-time decisions.”

The report highlights complex issues around visibility for shippers – including understanding what kind of data they should ask for and how they should use it. Meanwhile, 3PL challenges included finding ways to guide shipper technology decisions to yield the most effective data points for their supply chain.

Key Points:

3PLs are investing heavily in technology to deliver business intelligence:

  • The array of delivery options that allow 3PLs to customize the data they provide to shippers has expanded.
  • Significant advances in visibility technologies have created a wide range of perceptions and expectations among shippers, including some that are inaccurate.
  • 3PLs continue to focus their technology on customers’ visibility needs amid an explosion of available data.
  • Every 3PL participating in this report underscored a commitment to providing substantial financial resources to support visibility.
  • In a dynamic market, 3PLs are capturing the opportunity to deliver business intelligence.
  • The future challenge will be to find optimal and flexible methods to sustain substantial advances already made.

Watch the accompanying video discussing highlights from the Freight Visibility Report:

The report contributors include executives representing:
Intelligent Logistics, L&M Transportation Services, InTek Freight & Logistics, project44, England Logistics, Blue Grace Group, Coyote Logistics, Sunteck TTS, NFI Industries, Total Quality Logistics, DRT Transportation, RLS Logistics, Allen Lund Company, Echo Global Logistics, Mullett Strategies, Covenant Transport Solutions, 10-4 Systems, Tucker Company Worldwide, Choptank Transport and Schneider Logistics Services. Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) Presents 3PL Leadership Awards

The lead legislative sponsors on the Transportation & Logistics Hiring Reform Act recognized

by the third-party logistics industry.

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia, June 20, 2017 – – Robert Voltmann, TIA’s President and CEO, the TIA Board of Directors, and 1700 TIA members recently awarded both Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) and Congressman John Duncan (R-TN/2nd) the 2017 TIA 3PL Congressional Leadership Award.

Senator Fischer and Congressman Duncan have been the champions for the industry and lead sponsors on the Transportation & Logistics Hiring Reform Act, which would create a national hiring standard that would simplify and ensure a Federal standard for the hiring of safe motor carriers. The legislation would enhance interstate commerce and promote safety within the transportation marketplace.

Senator Fischer and Congressman Duncan both understand the importance of moving this important legislative measure to the President’s desk because industry stakeholders currently are too often asked to second-guess the FMCSA in determining which carriers are safe to operate. There is not currently any federal standard for duty of care to ensure the selection of motor carriers that meet the necessary minimum requirements to operate on our nation’s highways.

“TIA applauds Senator Fischer and Congressmen Duncan for their continued leadership, and for introducing and backing the Transportation & Logistics Hiring Reform Act,” said Robert Voltmann, President and CEO, TIA.

“With over 550,000 active motor carriers operating in interstate commerce, and over 85% of those motor carriers being unrated, this is an opportunity for Congress to reinforce highway safety while promoting and clarifying a single federal standard for interstate commerce,” stated Voltmann as he continued, “The Transportation & Logistics Hiring Reform Act improves existing FMCSA safety rating and licensing processes, helps small business across America, and improves the overall safety of the transportation industry.”
