TIA Releases 3rd Quarter Performance Measures for 3PL Industry

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: [email protected]

The 3PL Market Report reflects that the Q320 numbers were dominated by the effects of COVID lockdowns, reports TIA Chief Economist, Noël Perry. Perry also notes that uncertainties may arise in the future but not as robust as Q3.

The report represents that for Q3 total invoice amount per shipment, shipments, and revenue improved by 10.6%, 16%, and 28.3%, respectively, compared to Q2.

The impact of COVID on freight was noticeable for Truckload with volume returning to Q119 levels. The data also indicates shippers relied on 3PLs more as 3PL TL volume grew more than the overall TL market.

The study participants reported activity in six modes or services offered. TL remains the dominant mode at 73%. Adding Intermodal and LTL, the three modes are 97% of all activity. The remaining 3% of activity comprises air, warehousing, and other miscellaneous services.

TIA’s 3PL Market Report contains rolling eight-quarter trends and fuel price comparisons, allowing 3PLs and industry observers to view how the industry is performing as well as to compare their business to companies of a similar size. Additionally, the report includes detailed 3PL activities by transportation mode and measures comparative volume, revenue, margin, and margin percentages, quarterly, and year over year.

The publication is based on monthly data submissions and surveys of TIA Members who provide current operating data and answer questions on business conditions affecting the 3PL industry. TIA’s efforts provide a comprehensive report on the trends and practices of the 3PL industry.

FMCSA Rate Transparency Listening Session

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: [email protected]

OCTOBER 29, 2020 – ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA – Transportation Intermediaries Association’s Vice President of Government Affairs Chris Burroughs released the following statement after a successful listening session hosted by the U.S. Department of Transportation. This listening session, regarding broker transparency petitions from OOIDA and SBTC, provided the clearest evidence to date that these petitions were based out of political opportunism to upend years of Congressional intent that would implement burdensome regulations, affecting brokers, carriers and consumers.

During the listening session, Burroughs stated that “TIA strongly opposes the OOIDA and SBTC petitions that would codify burdensome regulations that will negatively impact carriers, brokers and the public. These petitions came to fruition because of a temporary economic downturn that upended the supply-chain because of a global pandemic. Let me be crystal clear this was not broker ‘price fixing or price gouging.’ This is an attempt to undermine the free market.”

The call was made available to the public, allowing both brokers and motor carriers to present their case on the petitions and overall regulations to the supply-chain. TIA Members did just that in droves. For the duration of the call several TIA Members were able to successfully make the case and give the Department all the relevant information and answers it needed.

“TIA applauds the Department, specifically Acting Deputy Administrator Wiley Deck for taking this necessary step to hear comments from all interested parties and let the facts speak for themselves,” Burroughs concluded. “A national pandemic is not time for turning the supply-chain on its head in a way that would potentially devastate our members.”

TIA Comments on Department of Labor Worker Classification Proposal

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: [email protected]

OCTOBER 27, 2020 | ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA – Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), in coordination with our Operations Committee, filed comments to the United States Department of Labor (DOL) to ensure that TIA Members had their voice heard regarding proposed rulemaking by the Trump Administration, which revisits the classification of employee status, whether that be an independent contractor or employee.

This rule will pose a series of questions to help quickly determine employee classification, which seeks to reduce the current confusing tests that ultimately lead to harmful lawsuits and misclassification. TIA welcomes a strong set of federal guidelines, rather than the piecemeal approach which has been laid out in courts.

TIA has and will continue to make clear that our members deserve the freedom and flexibility that all parties enjoy in an independent contractor status. TIA’s comments focus on and ask the DOL for a 21st-century test and questions that are germane to the modern workforce which, for TIA Members, includes independent sales teams that work both on and off-site. These agents are used to a level of freedom set by their schedule and contractual financial obligation.

“TIA applauds the Department for taking this necessary step towards reducing confusion and modernizing the classification process for independent contractors who play an integral role in the 3PL industry and our 1,800 member companies,” stated Chris Burroughs, Vice President of Government Affairs for TIA.

Please view the public comments TIA has filed. Please view the DOL’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking.
